Locs are a beautiful, low-maintenance style, but “low maintenance” doesn’t mean “no maintenance”. The secret to healthy locs is a good routine at home between salon visits. As loc specialists at our Bolton hair salon, these are the tips we share with our clients most often.

Protective styling at Baddy's Parlour Bolton, where we keep braids and locs healthy

Clean scalp, healthy locs

One of the biggest myths about locs is that you shouldn’t wash them. In reality, clean locs are healthy locs. Use a residue-free shampoo so nothing builds up inside the loc, and focus on cleansing the scalp. Make sure your locs are fully dry afterwards, trapped moisture is the main cause of that musty smell and, in some cases, mildew.

Moisturise (but don’t overdo it)

Locs can get dry, which leads to breakage. A light water-based spray, sometimes with a little natural oil, keeps them supple, and a little moisture goes a long way towards healthy locs. The key word is light, heavy butters and creams sit inside the loc and cause build-up, so a little and often is far better than a lot in one go.

Protect them at night

Cotton pillowcases draw moisture out of your locs and cause friction and frizz. Wrap your hair in a silk or satin scarf, or sleep on a satin pillowcase. This simple habit keeps your locs neater for longer and protects your retwist.

Don’t over-retwist

It’s tempting to retwist often to keep the roots tidy, but retwisting too frequently puts tension on the roots and can lead to thinning over time. For most people, a professional retwist every four to six weeks is plenty. In between, let your new growth settle.

Healthy locs need professional maintenance

A good loc technician does more than tidy your roots. We check the health of your locs, manage any thinning or weak points before they become a problem, and keep your parting even so your locs grow strong and uniform. Whether you have starter locs or a mature set, regular maintenance at our Bolton salon keeps your locs healthy and looking their best for years to come.
